Hours after locking up another restricted free agent to provide depth within the system in defenseman Reece Willcox, the Flyers did the same with another restricted free agent, this time a forward.
Danick Martel has signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Flyers, worth $715,000, according to a report by Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
Martel has been a fixture of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for the last three seasons. He had a career year in 2017-18 with the Phantoms, scoring 25 goals and 40 points in 59 games. In his three full seasons with the Phantoms, Martel has scored 67 goals and has 117 points in 194 games.
Martel also made his NHL debut last season with the Flyers, playing in four games. He did not record a point, but fit in as a solid energy player.
Martel's deal is very similar to the deal Willcox signed with the Flyers earlier in the day. Both contracts have the same cap hit should the player reach the NHL — $715,000 — and both are two-way deals, meaning that both are expected to be part of the Phantoms lineup next season.
By signing Martel, the Flyers have four remaining restricted free agents left to sign. Anthony Stolarz, Robert Hagg and Tyrell Goulbourne remain unsigned. Taylor Leier is also unsigned, but has an arbitration hearing set for Aug. 3 should a deal not be reached before then. Leier is the only remaining RFA eligible for arbitration.
