Flyers skid reaches 6 in OT loss to Calgary Flames

3-on-3 play was required in Calgary, but not too much, as Mikael Backlund scored on a controversial redirection just 35 seconds into overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 win over the Flyers on Thursday.

Despite Michael Raffl's first goal of the season, offense still continued to come at a premium for the Flyers, as they managed to score just one goal in 60-plus minutes against the team that has yielded the most goals in the NHL so far.

Raffl's goal came on a wraparound with just 35 seconds to play in the second period with Claude Giroux earning the lone assist, closing out the period on a promising note. The Flyers (4-6-3) could not muster anything after that, and their losing streak has now reached six games.

It's their first time since last season that the Orange and Black have conceded six consecutive losses. With 11 points now, they remain one point ahead of Carolina for sixth place in the Metro Division.

The Flames (4-9-1) took a 1-0 lead at 4:40 of the first period, as Josh Jooris scored 11 seconds after serving a holding the stick penalty on Mark Streit. Backlund registered the lone assist for what would ultimately be his first of two points in the game.

In addition to their six-game losing streak, power play woes continued to mount for the Orange and Black as well. They were scoreless on two attempts, and have now gone scoreless in their last 16 attempts.

Michal Neuvirth continued to be a lone bright spot, as he turned away 28 of 30 shots. Karri Ramo made 26 saves on 27 shots.

Returning to the lineup for the first time since Oct. 21, Sean Couturier was held point-less with a minus-1 rating in 19:31 of ice time. Couturier also took 20 faceoffs, winning seven.

The Flyers next close out their road trip on Saturday, as they visit the Winnipeg Jets.
