Flyers Snap Losing Streak with Win in Calgary

At long last, it's finally over.

The Flyers put together a flurry of goals in the second period to open up a lead and held down the fort defensively in the third to finally finish off a game and snap their 10-game losing streak, beating the Flames, 5-2, on Monday night.

In a high-paced first period, scoring was limited, but the chances started coming late in the period. And it was the Flames capitalizing first.

Off a shot by Curtis Lazar, Troy Brouwer was able to get the rebound and score to give Calgary the lead with 1:45 left in the opening period.

The Flyers were able to fight back and get a goal before the end of the period. A loose puck sat in the crease and both Michael Raffl and Valtteri Filppula chopped at it to put it into the net. Filppula's stick was in front of Raffl's, giving him the goal.

Shots were 14-8 Flames after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Flyers had to kill of a penalty to the Flames that featured some close chances. Then they started scoring.

First it was a point shot by Shayne Gostisbehere was deflected by Scott Laughton, hit the post and banked off of Mike Smith and in to give the Flyers the lead at 7:31. Just 25 seconds later, Raffl got his goal with a one-timer on a beautiful feed from Jake Voracek to make it 3-1.

The Flyers got a power play shortly after and struck again with Wayne Simmonds picked up a loose puck in front to make it 4-1 in a matter of 1:11.

The Flames did add a goal late in the period. Sean Monahan, who scored a hat trick against the Flyers two weeks earlier, scored on a screened Brian Elliott to make it a two-goal game.

Despite the Flyers outburst of goals, the Flames dominated the period in shots, finishing the second with a 35-15 shot advantage through 40 minutes. 

The Flyers picked up where they left off to start the third. Laughton got on the board again by burying a rebound to make it 5-2 just 1:51 into the period.

Moments later, Dale Weise took a high hit to the head from Travis Hamonic. Though there was no penalty on the play initially, Hamonic was assessed a match penalty, giving the Flyers a five-minute power play as Weise went to the locker room.

The Flyers failed to score on the power play, but managed to take five minutes off the clock.

From there, the Flyers used a good defensive effort to finish the job, holding the Flames to 10 shots in the final period, all stopped by Elliott.

Elliott finished the game with 43 saves on 45 shots. Smith made 16 saves on 21 shots.

The Flyers are back in action on Wednesday night, taking on the Edmonton Oilers. Game time is set for 9:30 p.m.
