Well, it's over. After three straight weeks of Flyers victories, 10 in a row as of Wednesday's win in Colorado, the Dallas Stars put an end to the streak with a 3-1 win over the Flyers on Saturday afternoon in Dallas.
The Flyers streak certainly showed what this team is capable of over a stretch of play, but there is a lot to take away from the first loss for the team since Nov. 25.
Here are 10 Postgame Points from Flyers-Stars.
- Before going any further, you have to appreciate the streak for everything it was. For 10 straight games, the Flyers did everything right, got all the bounces, played determined, won games in different fashion of different styles and tones and that helped make them the talk of the NHL. Be proud of this team for that before saying anything else. Yes, it's disappointing to watch the streak end, but this isn't like a Game 7 loss where there is no tomorrow. The Flyers have a game on Monday, and that needs to be the focus.
- Remember how hockey is a game of inches? Last Saturday, the Stars Radek Faksa hit the post shorthanded right before Brayden Schenn's game-tying goal. This Saturday, Ivan Provorov hit the crossbar and then the post in the third period. After the second post for Provorov, Jordie Benn sealed the Flyers first loss in 11 games with an empty-net goal.
- Something else to consider about the Flyers streak was that they never played an opponent twice during the stretch. Until Saturday. To face a team that saw this just a week ago, had time to make the adjustments and nearly won in the first meeting, it makes it that much tougher. Dallas was prepared on Saturday.
- The next two games are crucial for the Flyers. For one, they are the final two home games for them in 2016. On Monday, they get the Nashville Predators and while they have been struggling, the Flyers are dealing with defeat for the first time in three weeks. It's easy to get up for games when you're winning, but now the Flyers have to respond to a loss. Nashville could look to pounce on a vulnerable team if the Flyers don't bring the energy they did during this streak. On Wednesday, they get the Washington Capitals, who have currently won six straight games entering Saturday.
- Credit the Stars a lot for making zone entries tough for the Flyers. The Flyers made a push in the third period. The neutral zone play and forechecking by the Stars made getting the puck up the ice a nightmare for the Flyers at times. Again, Dallas was fully prepared for this game.
- A big reason the Flyers lost was the way they approached the second period. With a 1-0 lead entering the period, the Flyers looked passive, sitting back and allowing the Stars to attack freely. While Dallas only managed the equalizer in the period, it was 20 minutes lost for the Flyers.
- There's something about Flyers-Stars games that shows how bad the officiating can get. Last Saturday, it looked like the Flyers benefitted from some late calls against Dallas and couple that weren't called on them. There were two penalties called in the game on Saturday. The one on Dallas late was a clear hook in a pressure situation, quite possibly saving the game-tying goal. But the Flyers were called for a phantom too-many-men on the ice penalty that wasn't even close and the Stars got away with two slashing penalties during the game.
- Steve Mason played well in goal, definitely deserving of a win, but his rebound control wasn't at its best. Dallas capitalized twice, which was enough.
- The Flyers led 1-0 in the first on Taylor Leier's first NHL goal, a great milestone for the 22-year-old. Leier has put together a very successful AHL career, but in limited play in the NHL hasn't really had much of a chance to score. Watching him get on the board was a nice way to start the game.
- As the third period progressed, Jake Voracek was starting to get double-shifted on a line with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Chris VandeVelde. Roman Lyubimov did not play much in the third, but had a few good possession shifts, winning puck battles along the boards.
Bottom Line
It was bound to end at some time. In a 10-game stretch, it is very hard to get all the bounces, have some luck and play well enough to win night in and night out. Saturday's game was simply one of those games where it doesn't all go your way.
The task for the Flyers now is to close out the calendar year with the same level of play and energy that got them to 10 straight wins. The Flyers were due for that let-down sooner or later. The bounce-back effort on Monday against Nashville is the task that now awaits and needs to be there.
But for now, shake off the disappointment of defeat and recognize a great win streak for the Flyers. They sure provided some memorable moments for a city struggling to find any from their sports teams.
