It has been no secret that Ron Hextall has been looking to unload salary and sizable contracts. On Wednesday, he did both.
The Flyers traded Vincent Lecavalier and Luke Schenn to the Los Angeles Kings for forward Jordan Weal and a 2016 third-round pick.
Lecavalier signed with the Flyers prior to the 2013-14 season, but fell out of grace with Craig Berube and wasn't a fit for Dave Hakstol. His massive five-year, $22.5 million contract was one that Hextall was actively trying to move for two seasons.
In 133 games with the Flyers, Lecavalier scored 28 goals and added 30 assists for 58 points.
The Flyers will retain half of Lecavalier's contract in the deal.
Schenn was acquired by the Flyers in a trade with Toronto that sent forward James van Riemsdyk prior to the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season. In 213 games with the Flyers, Schenn scored 12 goals and added 30 assists for 42 points.
The Flyers will also retain half of Schenn's $3.35 million salary. Schenn is in the final year of his contract.
Weal, a 23-year-old forward, who is 5'10" and 179 pounds, made his NHL debut earlier this season with the Kings, playing in 10 games. He has yet to record a point.
Weal was a third-round pick of the Kings in 2010 and spent the last three seasons with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL. In 221 career games in the AHL, Weal has scored 58 goals and added 115 assists for a total of 173 points.
