Overtime in Allentown was a glimpse of the future.
A rush up the wing by Nolan Patrick created space and allowed him to feather a perfect pass to Shayne Gostisbehere for the one-timer and game-winning goal in a 3-2 Flyers win.
In Brooklyn, the Flyers suffered a 3-2 loss in regulation to the Islanders, splitting the split-squad games on Wednesday night.
The Flyers trailed early in the game in Allentown thanks to a couple early penalties. Mathew Barzal fired a one-timer to beat Michal Neuvirth to open the scoring.
The Flyers managed two goals in the second period, including one in the first minute of the second. Taylor Leier buried a feed from Dale Weise on a two-on-one on the power play to tie the game.
Leier struck again on the power play later in the period to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
The score held throughout the third until the final seconds. With the goalie pulled, the Islanders tied the game as Anders Lee cut in on a breakaway and scored on a rebound to even the score at two.
But it was the Flyers who came out victorious this time in overtime. Patrick carried the puck into the zone and threaded a perfect pass to Gostisbehere for the game-winner.
Neuvirth made 19 saves on 20 shots in two periods in his first game action of the preseason.
In Brooklyn, the Flyers got off to the early lead with a goal by Travis Konecny in the first minute. The Islanders tied the game as Devon Toews scored in the first.
The 1-1 tie held into the third as well until the Islanders pulled away in the final 10 minutes. Johnny Boychuk broke the tie with a goal at 11:19 of the period. Andrew Ladd added a power-play goal late to make it a 3-1 game.
The Flyers made it interesting with a power-play goal by T.J. Brennan in the final two minutes, but dropped the away game in the split-squad by one goal.
The Flyers have a quick turnaround, getting back on the ice on Thursday night against the Boston Bruins. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
