Chip Kelly has a new job…just not the one you may have been expecting.
The former head coach of the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers is joining ESPN as a studio analyst for college football and the NFL, the network announced on Friday.
Kelly spent three seasons as the Eagles head coach from 2013 to 2015. The team made the playoffs with a 10-6 record in his first season, but missed the playoffs with a 10-6 record the following season. Kelly was fired after Week 16 in the 2015 season, with the Eagles record at 6-9.
Kelly then spent one season as head coach of the 49ers, who posted a 2-14 record last season.
"I spoke with a lot of people this offseason about different situations for me — in coaching and TV," Kelly said in a statement. "I had various opportunities in both. In the end, I have had a relationship with ESPN for many years from when I was coaching and after speaking with them, I decided it was the best step for me to take."
Kelly had reportedly auditioned to join FOX, but was ultimately not hired. There were rumors of several opportunities to serve as a coordinator in the NFL.
As part of his role at ESPN, Kelly will be a part of Saturday's college football lineup. He will also make appearances on SportsCenter on Sundays for analysis.
