Two former Philadelphia Eagles found new teams to call home Tuesday, as Evan Mathis and Michael Vick both signed 1-year deals to join AFC contenders.
Vick joins the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were in need of a quarterback to backup Ben Roethlisberger after former backup, Bruce Gradkowski, dislocated his finger in Sunday's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
The 35-year-old spent the 2009-2013 seasons with the Eagles, compiling a 20-20 record and completing 59.5 percent of his passes for 9,984 with 57 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. The speedy Vick also added 1,998 yards on the ground with 15 touchdowns.
The former number one overall pick's best season with the Eagles came back in 2010, where he started 12 games, completing 233-of-372 pass attempts for 3,018 yards to go along with 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Vick would later earn his fourth Pro Bowl selection while leading the Eagles to a 10-6 record and an NFC East division title.
Mathis will join the Denver Broncos. The lineman signed a 1-year deal worth $2.5 million, which can increase to $4 million if Mathis achieves all the play-time incentives.
"Evan Mathis is an accomplished veteran who has played at a very high level for the last several seasons," Broncos general manager John Elway said Tuesday. "He will immediately make our team better, and we are excited to have him as part of the Denver Broncos.
A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Mathis declined a $5.5 million offer from another team to play with Peyton Manning and the Super Bowl-contending Broncos.
The 33-year-old was cut by the Eagles last June after a contract dispute in which Mathis sought to renegotiate a five-year, $25.5 million contract that he signed back in 2012. He elected to hold out of the team's OTAs back in May to show his dissatisfaction.
Mathis spent four seasons in Philadelphia as the team's starting left guard, and made the Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014 as a member of the Eagles.
