KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Philadelphia Phillies 3B/OF Cody Asche has signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals, the club announced Thursday evening via Twitter.
Asche, 27, remains in the American League Central after slashing just .105/.177/.175 with six hits and four RBIs spanning 19 games and 62 plate appearances last season with the Chicago White Sox. Asche appeared in primarily the designated hitter role while facing right-handers in 2017; he took the field in only five of his overall appearances. Although he made the White Sox' Opening Day roster, Asche was soon optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on May 14 and never returned to the majors.
The St. Charles, Missouri native's signing with Kansas City comes 54 days after electing free agency on Oct. 21.
Just this past Sunday — amid the vitality of Keaton Jones' anti-bullying video on social media — Asche offered guidance to his followers in need of support. "If you’re a kid out there somewhere who needs a friend, DM me. I will be your friend," Asche tweeted.
After reaching out to Asche that evening, he direct messaged the following to me in response:
"I can definitely sympathize with you man.. I’ve gone through a lot of failure in my life esp recently.. no one is perfect but finding good people and friends makes things so much better."
Because of Asche's efforts, the saying "good things happen to good people" never was more applicable.
In four seasons with the Phillies from 2013-2016, Asche combined for 105 extra-base hits and 125 RBIs in 371 games.
