Long-time Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz always wore the jersey number of a middle reliever. For years, Chooch wore No. 51 for the Phillies. When he was traded to Seattle, he was issued No. 52 because No. 51 is frozen out of respect for both Ichiro and Randy Johnson.
Ruiz lived up to his jersey number on Tuesday night, as the Seattle Mariners took on the Minnesota Twins in Minnesota and he took the mound with his Mariners down 19-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Ruiz allowed two hits, two walks, and one earned run as he got the final three outs for the Mariners. The earned run came on Eddie Rosario‘s third home run of the night for the Twins. Ruiz struck out one batter (Kennys Vargas) in his time on the mound for the Mariners. Ruiz reached 83 miles-per-hour on the radar gun, and some of his pitches had some nice movement.
Ruiz never did pitch for the Phillies, though he made two appearances at third base.
