Former Phillies GM Amaro Jr. Returns to Front Office

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

For the first time in over three years, Ruben Amaro Jr. will be part of a Major League Baseball organization's front office. On Monday, the New York Mets announced that Amaro Jr. will serve as special assistant and advisor to the club's newly named general manager Brodie Van Wagenen in 2019.

Amaro Jr.'s promotion comes just a couple weeks after the Mets denied him an interview for the open general manager position. While he transitioned in recent years to the Boston Red Sox and Mets as first base coach — with hopes of becoming a manager — Amaro told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal in September that he still has "a lot to offer" in the front office as well.

The New York Post's Joel Sherman noted that Van Wagenen, a former agent, and Amaro Jr. each share a "Stanford background" and negotiated together while Amaro was the Phillies general manager.

This could be the perfect opportunity for Amaro Jr. to resurrect his career.
