BRONX, N.Y. — Former Philadelphia Phillies southpaw J.A. Happ earned his major league-leading 17th win of the season in the Toronto Blue Jays' 7-4 victory over LHP C.C. Sabathia and the New York Yankees Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Spanning 7 1/3 innings, Happ allowed four runs — three via solo home runs by third baseman Chase Headley, second baseman Starlin Castro and designated hitter Gary Sanchez — on seven hits, one walk and 96 pitches, 63 of which were strikes.
Following Happ for the most wins in baseball are Boston Red Sox RHP Rick Porcello (16), Baltimore Orioles RHP Chris Tillman (15) and Washington Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (15).
Happ, 33, was traded to the Houston Astros on July 29, 2010, along with outfielder Anthony Gose and infielder Jonathan Villar, in exchange for then-143-game winner and three-time All-Star RHP Roy Oswalt.
According to ESPN's Cy Young Predictor, Happ is currently the favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award with 12.6 more Cy Young points (144.8) than Orioles LHP Zach Britton (132.2).
In 173 games, 164 starts and 946 innings since departing Philadelphia — playing with four different clubs in the Astros, Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates — the 10-year veteran has a 65-59 record with a 4.20 ERA and 1.356 WHIP ratio.
