Former Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg returns to Cubs organization as team ambassador

Nearly 30 weeks after resigning from the Philadelphia Phillies organization as its 52nd manager in franchise history, Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg is reportedly returning to the organization in which he played for 15 seasons: the Chicago Cubs.

Sandberg, 56, has been named an ambassador of the Cubs, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

Gonzales writes:

During his minor-league managing stint with the Cubs, Sandberg received praise from players such as Darwin Barney and scouts outside the organization for his teaching skills. But his new duties as an ambassador allow him plenty of freedom in future years, according to a source.

Sandberg managed within the Cubs minor league system at the Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A levels from 2007-2010. On Nov. 15, 2010, he was hired by the Phillies to lead the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, a position he held until 2013.

An official announcement was made Friday evening at the Cubs Convention.

The Phillies were 119-159 under Sandberg, and 26-48 leading up to his resignation in June of 2015.
