Former Phillies outfielder Delmon Young arrested on battery charge

MIAMI – Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Delmon Young was arrested late Sunday night in Miami, Florida, under accusations of "choking and threatening to kill a valet attendant" and "using ethnic slurs," according to Andy Slater of 940-AM WINZ.

The incident started when a valet attendant at the Viceroy hotel refused to give the 10-year Major League veteran access to a night club. Young, angered, reportedly then grabbed the attendant by the neck.

"Stupid Cuban, open the f–king door," Young allegedly told the victim. After repeatedly telling Young he couldn't open the door because the club was closed, Young said "I'm gonna f–king kill you, you Latin piece of sh-t" and then reached over the valet podium and grabbed the victim around his neck with both hands, strangling him, the police report states.

The victim said he was able to break away from Young's hands. Young then fled but was later met by police at his residence, which is also at the Viceroy. Police say Young answered the door naked from his waist down. According to police, Young said he didn't know anything about the incident, but was identified by the victim.

Young told the cop on scene after he was placed under arrest, "I'll slap you in the face with money you f–king Cuban," the report says.

Young, 30, was charged with one count of battery, but was released on bond earlier this afternoon, according to Slater.

This is not the first time Young has faced trouble with the law. In April 2012 as a member of the Phillies, he was arrested in New York City following claims from police that he "yelled anti-Semitic epithets during a fight at his hotel," according to WDIV.

The Birmingham, Alabama, native has yet to sign with a new club for the 2016 season. Last year in 52 games with the Baltimore Orioles, Young hit .270/.289/.339 with two home runs and 16 runs-batted-in.

Young is the second former Philadelphia athlete reported to be involved in altercations this past weekend, joining all-time Eagles leading rusher LeSean McCoy in an incident with two off-duty police officers on Sunday.
