Franco’s blast forces extras, Phillies walk off on error

A line-drive single by Maikel Franco marked the Phillies first hit of the night. It was the seventh inning.

When Franco stepped to the plate again in the ninth, he had a chance to be a hero for the second straight night. He delivered.

Franco capped a four-run comeback for the Phillies with a three-run home run off Aroldis Chapman to tie the game.

That forced extra innings, where an error allowed the Phillies to claim a 5-4 win over the Reds in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Cole Hamels worked through three scoreless innings before allowing a two-run single to Brandon Phillips in the fourth, giving the Reds the lead.

Hamels worked seven innings allowing the two runs on six hits but it wasn't enough to avoid his fifth loss of the season.

Freddy Galvis helped aid Hamels strong start with a great sliding play in the sixth.

Hamels went out to start the eighth inning as well before being pulled while throwing his warm-up pitches. The trainers did not tend to Hamels, which indicates that it was not injury-related. Ken Giles threw a scoreless eighth inning in relief of Hamels.

Jake Diekman allowed a two-run home run to Joey Votto in the ninth, capping the Reds scoring.

The Phillies managed just one hit off Mike Leake, a two-out single by Franco in the seventh, before the ninth. In the ninth, they opened with singles by Ben Revere and Jeff Francoeur to chase Leake from the game.

The Phillies did get on the board as Chase Utley lined one to center that was caught on a dive by Billy Hamilton. Revere tagged up from third and scored.

Ryan Howard followed with a walk, setting the stage for Franco's heroic three-run blast to even the score.

Jonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless 10th and Luis Garcia worked out of a jam in the 11th.

In the 11th, after a double by Cody Asche, Galvis grounded one to first that was thrown away by Votto, allowing Asche to come home with the winning run.

The Phillies close out the three-game series with the Reds on Thursday night. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
