Frandsen: Harper Would ‘Thrive, Fit in Just Perfect’ With Phillies

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Newly named regular Phillies radio color analyst Kevin Frandsen — who joined the broadcast team in January 2018 following a nine-season career, two of which spent in red pinstripes — recently joined SportsRadio 94 WIP's Joe Giglio to discuss the latest happenings of the offseason, including the Phillies' interest in free agent superstar, Bryce Harper.

Frandsen and Harper were Nationals teammates in 2014, ironically the only season thus far in Harper's seven-plus-year career that he was not named an All-Star. Frandsen said he "loves" the 26-year-old, and that he is a "great kid."

"He's a kid — that's the one thing we all have to remember on this whole thing," Frandsen said. "When I played with him, he was [21 years old]."

Frandsen later said Harper would "thrive" at Citizens Bank Park, if acquired, given Phillies fans' demand for passion.

"There's a true passion he has for the game that I think would fit in just perfect there."

Frandsen is not the only former Phillies and Nationals player, and teammate of Harper, to consider the prospects of Harper playing in South Philadelphia. World Series champion closer Brad Lidge played with Harper in his rookie season (2012), and said he "loves the way" Harper can "potentially just go crazy" at Citizens Bank Park, whose right field "is a joke."

Pairing Harper with Rhys Hoskins, who will also be 26 come Opening Day, would be a strong duo in the middle of the Phillies lineup. Over the last two seasons, the two have produced a combined 106 doubles, 115 home runs, 331 RBI and 322 walks.

"Rhys and him would be 26 years old together — righty and lefty in that lineup — and you're going, 'oh my,'" Frandsen said. "You can see all the possibilities, one protecting the other and just creating that vibe."

Frandsen, who will split color analyst duties in 2019 with Larry Andersen, alongside Scott Franzke, said he hopes to "call a bunch of his games."

"The No. 34 jersey being the last to wear it was [Roy Halladay], and I think that would look pretty good on him there.

"I'm a big fan."

The annual Winter Meetings will officially get underway Monday in Harper's native city of Las Vegas, Nevada.
