Future Flyers Report: Gostisbehere second in Hobey Baker Award voting, involved in brawl

On Saturday night, Shayne Gostisbehere and the Union College Dutchmen found themselves in an unfamiliar position, as they were upset by unranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by the score of 2-1. The story of the 2nd Annual Capital District Mayor's Cup wasn't the big win by RPI, but the brawl that came at the end of the contest.

After the final whistle blew on Saturday night, both benches cleared and a huge brawl ensued featuring Union College head coach Rick Bennett and RPI head coach Seth Appert nearly fighting one another. According to College Hockey News, Bennett has received a two-game suspension for the incident while two of his players, Mat Bodie and Eli Lichtenwald, will receive a one-game suspension. RPI's Steve Zalewski and Luke Curadi will also receive one-game suspensions for the altercation.

As for Gostisbehere, he didn't take part in the fighting. You'll see Gostisbehere, number 14, looking at some of the scrum from 0:59-1:01 and then talking to a ref at 1:24, but you don't see him take part in any fisticuffs. With just 14 PIMs in 24 games this season, and his history that lacks fighting, it wasn't expected that Gostisbehere would drop the gloves.

With the loss, Union College dropped from third to fourth in the NCAA men's ice hockey rankings.

The game between Union College and RPI isn't the only big news surrounding Gostisbehere, as he is doing pretty well when it comes to Hobey Baker Award voting. The blue liner is second in the voting for the annual award handed out to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player. With 7,461 votes, Gostisbehere trails only St. Cloud State's Ryan Faragher, who has a total of 8,027 votes. Gostisbehere is slightly ahead of Maine's Ben Hutton, who has 7,443 votes, and the noteworthy Johnny Gaudreau, who has a total of 7,259.

Faragher is 12-4-3 with a save percentage of .909 and a 2.45 GAA with St. Cloud State, while Hutton, who is property of the Vancouver Canucks, has 20 points and is plus-9 in 24 games with the Black Bears. Gaudreau, who was picked in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames, has 50 points in 25 games with a plus-31 rating.

As for the other Flyers' prospects, Scott Laughton provided a three-point performance for the Oshawa Generals in a 5-4 loss to the Erie Otters on Sunday. The center had a pair of goals and a helper along with a plus-1 rating, as he sits second on the team in points behind the highly-touted Michael Dal Colle.

Marc-Andre Bourdon had a pair of assists and 10 PIMs in his first two games this season. Bourdon's 10 PIMs came for continuing an altercation that took place in the first period of the Adirondack Phantom's loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday by the count of 6-3.
