Phillies 2014 first round draft pick is about to get his first look at the Big Leagues on Friday against the New York Yankees at Bright House Field. Aaron Nola, 21, is not in major league camp, but will be with the big club for the day. Nola was drafted seventh overall in last years draft. The right-hander played for LSU last spring and started his professional career pitching for both Clearwater and Reading. Nola is considered a “fast-tracker” with a possible call to the Major Leagues this season.
The decision to bring up Nola has been long planned according to team officials. With the Phillies starting rotation in trouble going into the season, Nola could be with the big club as soon as June. Right now the rotation looks like Hamels, Harrang, Buchanan, Williams, and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.
Bob McClure, pitching coach, said they are bringing up Nola so he can see what the big leagues are like and know what to expect. Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg said he is excitied to see Nola pitch and will looking at his composure and strike throwing ability.
In his only minor league start of the spring Nola pitched three scoreless innings on the Sunday. Nola is expected to start the season in double A. Severino Gonzalez, 22, will be doing the same thing tomorrow during a road game at World Wide Sports against the Braves. Gonzalez was the Phillies 2013 Paul Owens Award winner.
Game will be on TCN at 1:05 pm.
