Game 2 Preview: Flyers, minus Sean Couturier, look to equalize series

As if the Flyers weren't enough of an underdog in their series against the Washington Capitals, their deck is further stacked with the loss of Sean Couturier for two weeks

Couturier left the game midway through the second game after a hit along the boards from Alexander Ovechkin, and did not return, thus bringing a premature end to his fourth playoff series as a Flyer. The 23-year-old pivot is the Flyers' best defensive forward, and in 19 games without him this season, they've gone 6-9-4.

With Couturier out, expect Scott Laughton back into the lineup, for his playoff debut. Laughton found himself a healthy scratch for eight of the Orange and Black's last 10 games, and figures to find time on the penalty kill.

The Flyers and Capitals face off from Verizon Center at 7 p.m.

With Couturier out of the mix, Brayden Schenn is expected to pencil into his slot on the second line. Schenn has demonstrated proficiency at all three forward spots this season, and his hit on Karl Alzner as Game 1 ended helped set the tone for the rest of the series.

Tom Wilson has consistently been an agitator against the Flyers throughout his (short) NHL career, and helped validate that on Thursday. At 13:09 of the third period, he had boarded Andrew MacDonald, and dropped the gloves with Wayne Simmonds — a costly decision on Simmonds' part that cost the Orange and Black a power play. Wilson's not exactly known for his prolific offense, but his crash-and-bang style of play will be something to watch for as the series continues to intensify.

Steve Mason returns to the crease for the Flyers, after stopping 29 saves on 31 shots in the series opener. Mason had kept the Flyers in the game with a flurry of critical saves, and the score may have been much higher without his acrobatics. The Orange and Black surely owe Mason a few goals, for his Game 1 heroics.

Braden Holtby had his work cut out for him on Thursday with a 19-save shutout, holding the Flyers without a goal for the first time since their 2011 quarterfinal matchup against Buffalo. Holtby didn't face much quality scoring chances, and largely benefited from blocked shots in front of him.

With Couturier sidelined, expect Brayden Schenn to take his center spot on the second line. Scott Laughton is likely to slot on the third line, rather than breaking up the fourth line.
