Game 55 Preview: Flyers close out series with Rangers

Today may be Valentines' Day, but there will be no love between the Flyers and New York Rangers in their season finale tonight.

While the Flyers-Rangers rivalry is usually intense, tonight's game has an added element. After a skirmish between Wayne Simmonds and Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh led to McDonagh leaving with a concussion eight days ago, the Rangers — in particular, Tanner Glass — have threatened revenge.

For Simmonds, however, the more important issue is gaining two points — especially as the Flyers are hanging by a thread for a spot after dropping three of their last four games. Speaking to reporters after the Flyers' 2-1 loss to New Jersey on Saturday, Simmonds offered his take on the bounty that's on his head.

“I’m laughing,” Simmonds said. “I’m going to go play a hockey game." …

“That’s fine,” he said. “I’m going to take care of myself. Doesn't really matter to me. I’m going to play hockey. I’m going to get two points."

The Flyers and Rangers face off from Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m.

Shayne Gostisbehere has already set both the franchise record for longest points streak for a rookie, and NHL record for longest points streak by a rookie defenseman (a record that had been in place since 1977-78). He's shown no signs of slowing down, and will look to continue that record.

At 5-foot-7 and 179 pounds, Mats Zuccarello doesn't look like much. Thanks to his devastating speed, however, he's been able to establish himself as one of the Rangers' most consistent performers. Along with Derick Brassard, Zuccarello is one of two Rangers to have cracked the 40-point mark.

Goalie Matchup

Henrik Lundqvist faces the Orange and Black for the fourth time this season. He's posted a 1.85 GAA and .946 save percentage in those games.
