Cole Hamels had another strong outing wasted by little run support. Still it continues a nice streak of good outings. Hamels threw 82 pitches over 7 innings, allowing just 2 runs and probably could have gone further had the situation demanded a pinch hitter. Chase Utley, celebrating his reported extension, would tie the game up. Domonic Brown would also hit his 25th home run.
Travis Wood matched him pretty well. He's been a tough lefty for the Phils in his first few years in the majors. He himself allowed a pair over 6.1 innings.
After a strong 8th from Luis Garcia, he lost all control in the 9th. Justin DeFratus would enter the game to face Donnie Murphy only to throw a meatball down the pike for him to smash out of the ballpark for a 3 run go ahead home run.
The bullpen lost a tight one but it was clear this was going to be a battle of who could get the first clutch hit with runners on. Both teams left their share but it was Murphy's blast that did the job.
Tomorrow the Phillies send Ethan Martin to the mound for his second career start vs. Jeff Smardzija. It's a business person's special and begins at 1:05.
