It was gearing up to be one of those games for the Phillies for a while. Hamels ran into a tough third inning where he allowed two runs (one unearned) and had to throw a lot of pitches. But then he found his control again and was dominant for the rest of his seven inning outing. Gerrit Cole was decent but Clint Hurdle lifted him in the 6th for a bullpen that would immediate collapse.
Big afternoons for Ben Revere and Carlos Ruiz who drove in some key runs. It got a bit dicey in the 8th with Justin De Fratus allowing two runs but he eventually found control as well. Papelbon came in and threw a perfect 9th for the save.
It's good that Hamels has found himself in the win column but even more importantly had a nice outing following some adversity. The same could be said for De Fratus who looked like he was about to meltdown but found his stuff.
The boys come back home tomorrow night to take on Atlanta. It will be Cliff Lee vs. Tim Hudson at 7:05 at CBP. All the makings of a good pitcher duel.
