David Herndon had Tommy John Surgery this afternoon. Freddy Galvis was suspended 50 games after testing positive for PED's. Laynce Nix suffered a set-back thanks to a strained left calf today. Michael Stutes needs surgery on his shoulder to figure out what's wrong.
Needless to say, this win tonight was much needed with all of the bad new going around the Phillies organization. With Cole Hamels on the mound against the not-so-great Colorado Rockies, the offense would come alive and bring Hamels to his 10th win.
Cole into a jam early on when Tyler Colvin singled to right field to score the speedy Eric Young Jr. Cole really settled in after that first inning, striking out the side in the third, and retiring 13 straight before walking Todd Helton in the top of the sixth.
In between that stretch, the Phillies did a bit of scoring. In the bottom of the third, Placido Polanco singled to score Jimmy Rollins from second base. With Shane Victorino on first in the fourth inning, John Mayberry, Jr. launched a homer to left field, putting the Phils up 3-1.
In the fifth, Carlos Ruiz (batting clean-up tonight) doubled to deep left to score Jimmy Rollins, adding a run to the board.
Todd Helton scored in the sixth on a single from Chris Nelson. Nelson was gunned down trying to stretch his hit into a double, ending the inning.
Cole Hamels added to his own lead by slicing a single to left field in the bottom of the seventh, and later scoring on a groundout from Hunter Pence. With Rollins over at third, Carlos Ruiz sent a ball to the flower beds in left. His two-run shot took a whole three seconds to exit the field. 7-2 Phillies.
Cole Hamels pitched a fantastic eight innings tonight allowing two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out seven. This effort earned him his tenth win on the season, the first Phillie to do so this year.
Chad Qualls pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth which closed the deal and started this ten-game homestand with a win. Game two tomorrow at 7:05 with Joe Blanton against Alex White.
