Hamels receives zero run support, suffers third loss of season against Marlins

Final: Marlins 7, Phillies 0

WP: Dan Haren (3-1, 2.70 ERA) LP: Cole Hamels (1-3, 4.14 ERA)

Miami, Fl – In a game which took just 2 hours and 38 minutes to complete, the Miami Marlins (12-12) managed to win their fourth consecutive game, behind Dan Haren, as they opposed Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies (8-17).

Scoring was absent from this afternoon's game up until the bottom of the second inning. With two men on base for Miami, shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and second baseman Dee Gordon, third baseman Martin Prado homered for the second time this season to give his team an early 3-0 lead.

After just the first two innings, Hamels had already surrendered five hits and one walk on 45 pitches (26 strikes).

The Phillies' first hit came in the top of the third with one out, as Freddy Galvis singled for his 28th hit of the season in 80 at-bats (.350 batting average). Later in the inning, left fielder Ben Revere singled to put two runners on and bring the tying run to the plate, center fielder Odubel Herrera. He lined out, however, which ended the potential rally.

Miami's lead was extended in the next half-inning. With one out, first baseman Jeff Baker and catcher J.T. Realmuto doubled back-to-back, which brought home their team's fourth run of the afternoon.

Three additional insurance runs were added on by the Marlins' offense in the subsequent innings. Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the fourth, Prado doubled-home Gordon in the sixth, and Realmuto singled-home center fielder Marcell Ozuna in the seventh.

The Phillies' offense was nothing but nonexistent this afternoon, as they were ultimately shutout, 7-0. They went down 1-2-3 in six innings, and had zero walks along with just six hits total from Revere (2nd inning), Herrera (8th), Sizemore (4th), Ruiz (7th), Galvis (2nd) and Hamels (5th).

Hamels' six earned runs allowed this afternoon, over six innings of work, was his worst start dating back to April 29 of last season against the New York Mets. Over his six starts this season, he has received just 10 runs of run support, which averages to 1.67 per game.

With today's loss, the Phillies are now 2-11 on the road this season. They will rely on rookie Severino Gonzalez tomorrow afternoon, in his second career start, to avoid being swept and falling to ten games under (.500).
