Among the Phillies many problems in 2013 are errors, especially on the infield. But it was the Dodgers' shortstop that gave away the game on Sunday.
Hanley Ramirez was responsible for the two runs that counted in Friday's shutout win for LA. In the ninth inning on Sunday, an error on a low throw allowed the potential winning run to reach base. That run would score on a fielding error just three batters later.
That's how the Phillies managed to snap a 10-game winning streak for the Dodgers and pick up just their sixth win since the All-Star Break, rallying back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Dodgers, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
The Dodgers struck for the game's first run on the first pitch of the second inning. Cole Hamels fired a fastball to Andre Ethier that was belted into the seats in right for a solo home run.
Hamels allowed the second run of the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Jerry Hairston Jr.
In the bottom of the fourth, after going 21 2/3 innings without scoring in the series, Darin Ruf snapped the Phillies scoreless drought with a solo home run to deep left, his eighth of the season.
The Phillies would tie the game in the sixth on a fielder's choice ground out by Cody Asche.
Hamels allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings. B.J. Rosenberg and Jonathan Papelbon each pitched scoreless innings to keep the game tied going to the bottom of the ninth.
Casper Wells reached as a one-out baserunner on Ramirez' first error of the inning. Carlos Ruiz followed by capping his day with his fourth single, moving Wells to third. Jimmy Rollins stepped up as a pinch-hitter for Papelbon and was walked.
That turned the game into the hands of Michael Young, off the bench to hit for Michael Martinez. Young rolled on to short, right toward Ramirez. But the sure double-play ball was booted, allowing Young to reach and Wells to cross home with the winning run.
It was the first win for interim manager Ryne Sandberg.
The Phillies improved to 54-69 with the win and salvaged the series finale against the Dodgers to snap a four-game losing streak. Next for the Phillies on the current homestand is the first of four games against the Colorado Rockies. Ethan Martin starts against Jeff Manship.
