It's starting to become a pattern. For the fifth of six games this month, a game required overtime for the Flyers. For the fourth time, it required a shootout.
That was thanks in large part to Carter Hart, who withstood the flurry of chances that the Bruins fired his way late in the third period and in overtime after they had tied the game up earlier in the period.
Hart took center stage in the shootout as well, making two saves and poking the puck away from David Pastrnak to give the Flyers a 3-2 win over the Bruins in a shootout on Sunday night at TD Garden. It marked the fourth straight win for the Flyers and sixth straight game they have earned a point in the standings.
The Flyers came out of the gate with a lot of jump and it helped them get a first-period lead.
Off a rush, Travis Konecny was able to pick up a rebound and score to make it 1-0 with his eighth goal of the season at 13:50.
Late in the period, Phil Myers did it again. Off a great cross-ice pass from Konecny, Myers picked his spot and scored for the third straight game to make it 2-0 after one.
The Flyers outshot the Bruins, 14-5, in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second, both teams got chances, but shots were limited. After 40 minutes, the Flyers had 20 shots on goal and the Bruins had been held to just 10, their lowest total of the season through two periods.
Finally, in the third, the Bruins started to turn up play and it led to a goal. Danton Heinen took a turnaround shot that went through the legs of Justin Braun and hit Hart's skate and went it to cut the Flyers lead to one with 14:01 to play.
With 7:38 to go in the period, the Bruins were finally able to tie the game. Brad Marchand fired from the left circle and through a screen to beat Hart for his 11th goal of the season, tying the game at two.
In the final minutes of the third, Boston continued to get quality chances. Pastrnak was slashed on a breakaway by Ivan Provorov and given a penalty shot. Hart stayed with the chance and Pastrnak was stopped. The Bruins also got a power play with 3:20 to play and Hart made several great saves on the way to forcing overtime.
In the overtime, both teams had quality scoring chances. The Flyers had multiple two-on-one chances. The Bruins got a couple of quick transitions as well. The Flyers also got a 21-second power play at the end of the overtime and were unable to score.
In the shootout, Joel Farabee scored the only goal, lifting a chip shot over Jaroslav Halak. Hart stopped Charlie Coyle and Marchand in the first two rounds and then forced Pastrnak wide and poke checked him, securing another win for the Flyers.
Hart made 26 saves in the win. Halak stopped 27 shots in the loss.
Konecny and Sean Couturier each finished with two points.
The Flyers now get a couple of days off from game action before facing the Washington Capitals on home ice on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
