Hellickson exits with back tightness as Phillies salvage series behind Galvis, Howard

Final: Phillies 6, Dodgers 2  ❖  Attendance: 27,521

LOS ANGELES —  A three-run home run by shortstop Freddy Galvis and a three-RBI double by pinch hitter Ryan Howard in the top of the seventh and ninth innings, respectively, provided ample offense for the Philadelphia Phillies (53-63) to salvage the series finale in opposition of LHP Scott Kazmir and the Los Angeles Dodgers (64-50) Wednesday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Phillies veteran starter RHP Jeremy Hellickson was limited to just five innings of one-run baseball on three hits, however, as he had to exit early with back tightness.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki writes:

The Phillies will need a second starter Wednesday against the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park if Hellickson can't pitch, but he said he expects to be OK. It helps that he is not scheduled to pitch again for a week because the Phillies do not play games Thursday or Monday.

"It's definitely not something I think will linger more than a couple days," Hellickson said.

The two Dodgers runs came via a RBI double and single by first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and third baseman Rob Segedin in the latter-half of the first and seventh innings respectively.

The series finale was just the Phillies' 11th victory out of 62 games this season in which they were outhit by their opponent.

Game Notes:

  • WP: Elvis Araujo (2-1, 5.19 ERA); LP: Scott Kazmir (9-6, 4.44 ERA)
  • Hellickson had retired 14 of his last 15 batters before his early exit. Over his last 10 starts (62 1/3 innings), he has allowed just 18 earned runs on 51 hits and nine walks.
  • Over his last 15 plate appearances, first baseman Ryan Howard has two doubles, two home runs, five RBIs and a .467 batting average.
  • Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis has homered in two consecutive games. His previous two homers came over a span of 28 games from July 6 to August 8, where he hit .255.

The Phillies will have off on Thursday as they head home to begin a nine-game homestand Friday evening in opposition of the RHP Jon Gray and the Colorado Rockies. It will be rookie RHP Jake Thompson's second career start as former first baseman Jim Thome is inducted into the Wall of Fame prior to the game.  (Time: 7:05 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: SportsRadio 94 WIP).
