Hellickson looks to stop the bleeding in Los Angeles

By Greg Vince, Sports Talk Philly staff writer

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Philadelphia Phillies (52-63) Los Angeles Dodgers (64-49)
RHP Jeremy Hellickson LHP Scott Kazmir
(9-7, 3.72 ERA) (9-5, 4.51 ERA)

The Phillies look to escape Chavez Ravine with a win after being handed two pretty decisive losses from the Dodgers. Some of the young pitchers have shown to be prone to a few clunkers this season and Eflin and Velasquez definitely chalked up two forgettable performances. It should be refreshing to see Jeremy Hellickson take to the mound today and while nobody is expecting a complete game shutout, he has been on of the more reliable arms on the staff this season which is pretty much why I was against moving him for anything less than a rewarding package at the deadline. Last Friday, Hellickson held the Padres to three runs over six innings, notching his 9th win of the season.

Facing him is former 2008 World Series foe, Scott Kazmir. The veteran lefty has pretty much settled in to being an average innings eater when healthy over the past few seasons and has been fairly consistent for a Dodgers team that has experienced virtually every pitching woe possible with their rotation and still remains very much in it. He allowed four runs over 5.1 innings at Fenway last Friday in a loss against the Red Sox.

It's a pretty standard lineup vs. the lefty with everyone batting from the right side which means Tyler Goeddel and Jimmy Paredes at the corners and Tommy Joseph at first. And the former Phillies hero Chase Utley is leading off for L.A.

As Larry Shenk pointed out in his blog this morning, this is the final Phillies game that Vin Scully will be calling. His first being on April 18, 1950 at Shibe Park. Scully is among the last of the great broadcasters. If you have the MLB At Bat app, you should definitely put on the radio feed for the Dodgers as they have been running Scully's announcing for the first three innings of the home games. Don't miss the legendary announcer calling the action for your favorite team one last time.
