Herrera’s big day powers Phillies past Giants to earn series win

After dropping game one of their three-game series with the San Francisco Giants (23-35) by a score of 10-0 on Friday, the Philadelphia Phillies looked to be headed down the same road they took in May, en route to a 6-22 record. That wasn't the case in the second two games of the series for the Phils, as they defeated the Giants 5-3 on Saturday behind a strong debut from Ben Lively and 9-7 on Sunday, thanks to a phenomenal game from center fielder Odubel Herrera.

The Phillies win today snapped their 10-series losing streak and gave them back-to-back wins for the first time since their six-game winning streak from April 20-27.

Odubel Herrera was the star of the show on Sunday, as he followed up a three RBI day on Saturday with three hits on Sunday, scoring two runs and driving in three. He hit two doubles and a homer on Sunday, powering the Phillies to their 9-7 win. Freddy Galvis also had a big game at the dish on Sunday, hitting two home runs, scoring two runs and tallying three RBIs in the victory. Maikel Franco contributed with a home run as well.

On the pitching end of things, Jeremy Hellickson was looking good, but things came undone in the third following a Tommy Joseph error that led to two Giants runs. Hellickson stayed composed, but only lasted 5.1 innings, alloweing three earned runs while walking four and striking out four. Edubray Ramos and Joely Rodriguez each gave up a run while Luis Garcia, Pat Neshek and Hector Neris all pitched scoreless outings.

The Phillies trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first on Sunday, but Odubel Herrera and Howie Kendrick hit back-to-back doubles to put Philadelphia ahead 2-1. In the second, Freddy Galvis hit his first of two home runs, this time a two-run shot, to extend their lead to three at 4-1.

San Francisco made it a 4-3 game in the third, taking advantage of a Tommy Joseph error. The Phillies first baseman fielded a grounder and went to throw it to second to begin a double play, but instead plunked the runner going from first to second on the play. With everyone safe, Hellickson walked in a run and surrendered a sac fly and just like that, the Giants were within one.

Philadelphia added to their lead though, as Howie Kendrick scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third and Odubel Herrera hit a solo homer in the fifth to make it a 6-3 game in favor of the Phillies. In the next half inning though, Hellickson gave up a two-run homer to Brandon Crawford, which brought the Giants back to within one, 6-5. In the top of the seventh, San Fan took a 7-6 lead on an RBI single from Crawford.

The Phillies wouldn't go down fighting though. In the bottom of the seventh, Odubel Herrera hit another double, plating Cesar Hernandez from first, tying the game at seven. Maikel Franco hit a solo homer in the eighth and Galvis hit his second home run of the day two batters later to make it 9-7. Hector Neris struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning to end the game and get the Phillies their first series win since April.

Herrera and the Phillies will look to keep their hot bats alive as they travel to Atlanta to open up a series with the Braves at their new ballpark. Nick Pivetta will get the start for Philadelphia, joining the team after being promoted from Triple-A for the second time this season.
