Hoskins homers again as Phillies beat Cubs

By Theo DeRosa, Sports Talk Philly staff

Final: Phillies 7, Cubs 1

PHILADELPHIA — Rhys Hoskins doesn't even have a nickname on the back of his Players' Weekend jersey, but in three weeks since being called up to the majors, he's made a big name for himself in the big leagues.

Hoskins homered yet again — his fourth home run in five games and the fourth straight day with a Hoskins dinger — in the first inning to give the Phillies a lead over the Cubs.

Jerad Eickhoff pitched well through five innings as César Hernández hit a bases-clearing triple in the second to pad the lead. The Phillies held on and took the series opener against the defending World Series champions, 7-1.

WP: Jerad Eickhoff (4-7, 4.36)  ❖  LP: José Quintana (8-11, 4.49)

Game Summary

Kyle Schwarber teed off on Eickhoff in the top of the first with a solo shot to right, but Hoskins had a quick answer. He drove a two-run shot off a center-cut fastball from Chicago starter José Quintana to put the Phillies on top quickly.

Hoskins' shot was his ninth home run in just 16 games. He's the fastest player ever to reach such a mark.

Eickhoff hit a single to load the bases against Quintana in the second after the pitcher walked Jorge Alfaro, Alfaro's first walk of the season. Hernández came through by lining the ball over center fielder Ian Happ and scoring all three runners. Freddy Galvis followed with a single to score Hernández and give the Phillies a 6-1 lead.

The Phils missed a chance to add to it in the fourth, when Hernández was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single and Galvis was caught between third and home with Hoskins at the plate. To get Galvis, Quintana actually had to deliver the pitch and walked Hoskins, effectively getting him out of the way in the order as Galvis was tagged out to end the inning.

In the fifth, Eickhoff got two quick outs then two quick strikes. Schwarber recovered to stroke a single to right, and Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo followed with walks. Eickhoff managed to get Happ to end the inning,

Hoby Milner had to work a bit, but managed a scoreless sixth. Adam Morgan came on for the seventh and eighth and looked fantastic, sitting above 95 mph with his fastball and striking out five in two clean frames.

For the Cubs, Justin Wilson and Koji Uehara each pitched a scoreless frame. Maikel Franco homered off of Félix Peña to lead off the bottom of the eighth.

Héctor Neris didn't record a save, but he pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the 7-1 win for the Phillies.

Ben Lively (1-4, 3.70) starts at 7:05 on Saturday night. He'll oppose right-hander Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.52 ERA).
