Ichiro Suzuki to return for 16th MLB season as he aims for hit No. 3,000

According to MLB.com reporter Joe Frisaro, the Miami Marlins will announce this afternoon that they will re-sign 10-time All-Star, two-time batting champion and 10-time Gold Glove Award winner Ichiro Suzuki for the 2016 season.

Suzuki, who will turn 42 years old two weeks from Thursday, is just 65 hits shy of reaching 3,000. This would make him the first international player, and the 30th member overall, to reach the milestone plateau.

Suzuki is also two stolen bases shy of 500, and four walks shy of 600.

Suzuki batted a career-low .229/.282/.279 last season over 153 games and 438 plate appearances.

In the season finale on Sunday against the Phillies, the Japan native made his first major league appearance on the mound, after logging a total of 19,138 innings in the outfield since 2001.

Suzuki would have to go hitless in his first 438 at-bats next season to lower his career batting average below the .300 mark.
