Shortly after noon on Monday, Jordan Weal cleared waivers for the Flyers and will be assigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. That leaves 23 players on the Flyers roster, the maximum number for opening night on Friday in Los Angeles.
GM Ron Hextall confirmed that 19-year-0ld prospects Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny were on the team.
"Those kids, they made the team on their own," Hextall said. "These kids made the team on merit. Our plan is to keep them the whole year. This isn't a nine-game trial, those kids are on this team right now and at this point we expect them to be here all year."
"That's what you work for, 14 years of hockey," Provorov said. "It's kind of the end of one road and the start of a new one."
"That was the biggest thing for me. I think it would be a bit different and still feel the nerves," Konecny said. "Obviously I still have to perform and do what I have to do to make the roster each day, improve myself and work hard. But hearing it's not a nine-game tryout kind of gave me the relief to relax a bit, settle in, just play your game and have fun and enjoy the moment."
Weal hasn't technically been sent down yet due to injuries. Hextall said he wants to see how the numbers, for cap space, play out before making that move, but that eventually Weal would be joining the Phantoms.
In addition, this locks up roster spots for a few other bubble players like Roman Lyubimov and Chris VandeVelde.
The Flyers final roster looks like this:
Forwards: Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, Jake Voracek, Sean Couturier, Matt Read, Travis Konecny, Nick Cousins, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Michael Raffl, Dale Weise, Roman Lyubimov, Boyd Gordon, Chris VandeVelde
Defensemen: Mark Streit, Shayne Gostisbehere, Radko Gudas, Andrew MacDonald, Nick Schultz, Ivan Provorov, Brandon Manning
Goaltenders: Steve Mason, Michal Neuvirth
The Flyers also have Scott Laughton and Michael Del Zotto out with injury. Brayden Schenn is suspended for the first three games of the season and Radko Gudas is facing a suspension, potentially a five-game minimum, for his hit on Austin Czarnik in Saturday's preseason finale against the Bruins.
The Flyers open the 2016-17 season on Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings at 10:30 p.m.
