Jamie Moyer still has not retired, he will tell you. But in the free time he has had this season while not pitching, Moyer authored a book. Moyer's book, Just Tell Me I Can't: How Jamie Moyer Defied the Radar Gun and Defeated Time is set to be released on Tuesday. The book, co-authored with Larry Platt, describes itself as:
Long-time fans of the National Pastime have known Moyer's name for more than 25 years. That's because he's been pitching in the bigs for all those years.
With his trademark three pitches – slow, slower, and slowest – the left-handed Moyer is a pinpoint specialist whose won-lost record actually got better as he got older — from his 20s to his 30s and into 40s. He's only a few wins shy of 300 for his amazing career.
Fans pining for Moyer to be the Phillies next pitching coach may be disappointed; he is still working on new pitches to try to keep on playing.
Stan Hochman of the Philadelphia Daily News caught up with Moyer's co-author Larry Platt, and he explained:
"Well," Platt said, chuckling, "he's not retired. He did play around with a knuckleball this summer. Talked to Charlie Hough, to Tim Wakefield. He just loves the challenge of learning something new.
Moyer is the oldest pitcher in Major League history to record a win.
Hochman also notes that Moyer is not interested in a Brad Lidge-like retirement for either the Phillies or the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners have offered Moyer that option and he has declined.
