The Philadelphia Eagles will have a franchise icon return in 2019.
On Tuesday, the Eagles signed Jason Peters to a new one-year contract that will ensure that The Bodyguard is in green for his 11th season.

While full details of the deal have not been disclosed, the new contract relieves some salary cap space for the Eagles.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the deal has a max value of $10 million.

If we assume that all of Peter’s salary is counting against the cap, then the Eagles will have saved more than $3 million in cap space with the new deal as shown below.
Eagles Salary Cap Transaction Table
Transaction | Salary Change | New Cap Space |
---|---|---|
Cap Space as of February 25, 2019 | – | $3,613,815 |
Eagles Extend Brandon Graham | +$10,000,000* | -$6,386,185 |
Eagles Decline Tim Jernigan’s Option | -$7,000,000 | $613,815 |
Eagles Extend Jason Kelce | -$4,000,000 | $4,613,815 |
Eagles Extend Isaac Seumalo | +$800,000 | $3,813,815 |
Lane Johnson Restructures Deal | -$8,200,000 | $12,013,815 |
Eagles Trade Michael Bennett | -$7,200,000 | $19,213,815 |
Eagles Sign Jason Peters to One-Year Deal | -$3,166,668* | $22,380,483 |

That cap space may come in handy if the Eagles are in fact planning on signing a major defensive piece as the reports indicate right now.
Meanwhile, Peters will look to stay healthy for the 2019 campaign. While he was healthy toward the end of the season, Peters struggled to stay on the field for lengthy amounts of time early in 2018 and forcing Big V to come in cold mid-drive make him, as well as any other lineman, look bad.
Having Peters around should also be good news for the development of Jordan Mailata, who is widely expected to take over at the position should he continue to progress.
