Jeff Francoeur hits grand slam, but Severino Gonzalez’s poor start dooms Phillies

Normally when Madison Bumgarner gives up five earned runs, one must feel good about their team's chances.  But, Severino Gonzalez once again failed to give the Phillies a start deep into the game.  This time, the manager could not be blamed for the early exit, as the righthander had to be rescued from a third inning disaster.

Gonzalez struck out five batters, accounting for all but three of the outs he recorded.  But, the Giants got to work against Gonzalez right away.  Nori Aoki was hit by a pitch to begin the game, and Joe Panik followed with a single.  Angel Pagan followed with a single of his own to score Aoki that moved Panik to third base.  Brandon Belt hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Giants a quick 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Gonzalez began the inning on a positive note, striking out leadoff hitter Angel Pagan.  Buster Posey followed with a single, and after Brandon Belt struck out, Gonzalez seemed to have a handle on the game.  However, Brandon Crawford followed with a single, and then Matt Duffy with a single of his own to score Posey and move Brandon Crawford to third to make it 3-0 Giants. That is when Gonzalez really unraveled.

With Gregor Blanco at the plate, Gonzalez balked in the fourth run of the day for the Giants.  Blanco then walked to bring up Bumgarner.  The Giants ace pitcher singled to load the bases, and Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg pulled Gonzalez.

Dustin McGowan inherited Gonzalez's full bases and allowed a single to Nori Aoki to score both Duffy and Blanco to make the score 6-0 Giants.

The Phillies offensive output mostly came in the fourth inning.  Ben Revere led off with a single.  Cesar Hernandez, filling in for Chase Utley today, was hit by a pitch.  Maikel Franco singled to center, loading the bases.  After Darin Ruf was called out on a check swing, Jeff Francoeur stepped to the plate and did not disappoint.  Francoeur connected for a monster home run – a grand slam – to bring the Phillies within two at 6-4.

Madison Bumgarner would add to the Giants lead in the top of the seventh inning.   Matt Duffy reached base on a fielding error by Cesar Hernandez.  A Gregor Blanco groundout would move Duffy into scoring position.  Bumgarner singled to center to give the Giants their seventh run of the day.

The Phillies got one more off of Bumgarner in the eighth inning, as pinch-hitter Andres Blanco homered to center field   The 7-5 score would hold until the end as Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon pitched a blank top of the ninth for the Phillies, and Santiago Casilla picked up his second save in as many days against the Phillies with a scoreless ninth inning.
