Philadelphia, PA - The Phillies headed into Tuesday's game continually battling a lack of offensive production. Despite scoring one less run than they did on Monday evening, the Phillies held off the Chicago Cubs by a 3-2 score.
Phillies pitcher Jerad Eickhoff put together one of his better pitching performances in 2016, going seven innings and striking out eight Cubs.
The Phillies look to take the series from the Cubs in a 1:05 start on Wednesday afternoon in South Philadelphia, as Vince Velasquez takes on John Lackey.

The Phillies got things going in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Freddy Galvis doubled to left field. Maikel Franco followed Galvis in the order with a single, allowing Galvis to score. Batting fifth, Ryan Howard walked, but the inning ended after a Tyler Goeddel grounded out.
Howard would be the reason for the next run in the fourth inning. With one out, Howard stepped to the plate and belted a home run to right field. That put the Phillies up 2-0.
In the fifth inning and the Cubs threatening with runners at the corners, Jerad Eickhoff would get a ground ball that would become a double play. Ben Zobrist would come around to score the Cubs first run. That made the score 2-1 Phillies.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Phillies would add one more. With one out, catcher Carlos Ruiz singled. As pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes batted, Ruiz stole second base. Center fielder Odubel Herrera hit a single to left that was enough for Ruiz to score and make the score 3-2.
The Cubs threatened in the eighth against Phillies reliever Hector Neris. After an error by second baseman Cesar Hernandez allowed Cubs catcher Miguel Montero to reach first base, Neris allowed back-to-back singles, loading the bases with nobody out. Neris was pulled in favor of Jeanmar Gomez, looking to preserve a two-run lead with six outs to go.
Gomez got a fly out (which allowed the second run to score) and a ground ball double play, which got the Phillies out of trouble in the eighth. Despite allowing a baserunner in the ninth, Gomez was able to shut the door against the Cubs for his 19th save. The save was Gomez's first two-inning save.
