The Phillies continued their post All-Star break hot streak this afternoon in San Diego. A strong performance by starter Jerome Williams paired with another big day at the plate by centerfielder Odubel Herrera gave the Phillies a 3-1 win, their third straight. Herrera, the Phillies Rule-5 selection from this season, extended his hitting streak to 12 games and raised his average to .291. The Phillies have an MLB-best 16-5 record since the Midsummer Classic and today's win also evened out Pete Mackanin's record as the Phils manager at 19-19.
The Phillies wasted no time in getting on the board first this afternoon. After Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera hit back-to-back singles to lead-off the game, Ryan Howard plated Hernandez with his 23rd double of the season.
Herrera continues his hot hitting in the sixth as he drove a ball deep over the wall in right center field for a solo homer, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.
The Padres cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of Justin Upton.
The Phillies got the run right back in the seventh. Freddy Galvis led off the inning with a single and moved to third after a perfectly executed hit and run by Carlos Ruiz. Two batters later, Cesar Hernandez brought Galvis home with a single, making it a 3-1 Phillies lead.
The Phillies got a pair of runs in the eighth as well. With one out in the inning, Cody Asche got hit by a pitch. Freddy Galvis followed with a single. Two batters later, after a forceout by Carlos Ruiz, Chase Utley came on to pinch-hit and smacked a two-run double down the right field line, scoring Asche and Ruiz, extending the lead to four at 5-1.
The Padres took advantage of an outfield miscue from the Phillies in their half of the eighth. Herrera and Asche couldn't determine who was going to catch a fly ball off the bat of Alex Amarista, so it dropped in for a double. A wild pitch allowed him to move to third before Yangervis Solarte drove him in with an RBI-single to right, cutting the lead to three.
Ken Giles allowed a run but earned the save, his sixth since taking over as the Phillies closer 12 games ago. Jonathan Papelbon only had 17 save opportunities in the 100 games prior to that. The Phillies are 8-4 since that trade. The Nationals are 5-8.
