Upon news of Rich Dubee's dismissal by the Phillies, fans were immediately clamoring for former Phillie and 2008 World Champion, Jamie Moyer, to become the team's new pitching coach for the 2014 season.
Well, that never came to fruition obviously, as Bob McClure was hired. But now, another former Phillie is the topic of discussion today in a possible new coaching role: Jim Thome.
Thome, 43, unofficially retired after the 2012 season with the Phillies and Orioles and took a White Sox front office position as special assistant to their general manager, Rick Hahn. (This is a similar role that Charlie Manuel will have this season).
The Chicago Sun Times' Daryl Van Shouwen recently talked to Thome, and the future Hall of Famer spoke to him that he desires one day to become a manager:
Ultimately, I would love to get back on the field. Last year was so nice to be at home with my kids, watching my son play T-ball and taking my daughter to school every morning, and I love it. But I will say I do miss the game because I am a competitor. You can’t play forever, but the love of the game never leaves your soul. …
I want to look at what the next phase is for me getting back on the field, competing at a high level. There is a side to me that wants to manage someday and prepare myself for it if that opportunity came calling. I’d want to be ready.
