The Philadelphia 76ers have had an okay offseason, re-signing role players and filling out the roster via trades. One of the bigger players that they re-signed was J.J. Redick. The veteran sharpshooter was a part of one of the NBA's most efficient starting lineups alongside Ben Simmons, Robert Covington, Joel Embiid and Dario Saric last season, finishing with 52 wins and the Sixers' first playoff berth since 2012.
Redick mentioned during his exit interview that there was mutual interest from both sides on him returning to Philadelphia, but that almost didn't happen. On his most recent podcast, Redick talked about how he was close to signing with the Indiana Pacers.
"I almost signed with Indy. I was an hour away, two hours away, I was very close. I had a 5:00 p.m. deadline and it was basically 12:30, 1:00 in the afternoon when Philly changed the offer," said Redick. "They ended up getting Tyreke [Evans], which is a great signing."
Redick mentioned that he a whole conversation with Pacers head coach Nate McMillan and had a similar mindset to DeMarcus Cousins in free agency.
"If your incumbent team doesn’t offer, you need to go get an offer.”
If J.J. were to have signed with the Pacers, the offseason in Philadelphia could have certainly been much worse than folks are already making it out to be. Last year for the Sixers, Redick averaged 17.1 points per game on 46 percent shooting and 42 percent from beyond the arc. They re-signed him to a one-year deal shortly after LeBron James decided to go to the Lakers.
One of the funnier parts of J.J.'s podcast was when he was answering a question about who had the worst farts on the Sixers. He said it was Trevor Booker, who "caused problems on buses and planes" with his flatulence.
