In a pivotal offseason for the Sixers, the good news keeps on coming.
Just days after coveted prospect Ben Simmons received positive test results allowing him begin training, star center and rookie of the year candidate Joel Embiid provided an encouraging update on his surgically repaired meniscus in an interview with ESPN's Jackie MacMullen.
"I feel very lucky…When they did the MRI [before the surgery], it looked like my meniscus was fully torn. But when they got it in there, they realized that wasn't the case. It really turned out to be nothing, just a small, little thing. So that's very good," said Embiid.
With an injury history following Embiid, the good news is certainly well received.
Embiid admitted to surprising himself with his averages of 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in limited minutes. "I realize I have to take better care of myself, I didn't realize how good I could be. Especially seeing what I accomplished this year … I want to keep on getting better," said Embiid.
Embiid added that he plans to focus on strengthening his legs to withstand an NBA season while he rehabilitates his knee.
As for what he accomplished in the segment of the season he did play, Embiid feels that he should be rewarded as the league's rookie of the year:
"I mean, no disrespect to other guys. Dario is my teammate and my friend, and I love him…I know people are saying about me, 'Oh, he only played 31 games.' But look at what I did in those 31 games — averaging the amount of points I did in just 25 minutes."
If reports like this continue, The two rookie of the year favorites will be starting together next season, with another rookie of the year candidate running the point.
