John Calipari says Sixers should select Jamal Murray first overall

We are two weeks away from the 2016 NBA Draft in New York and the debate continues as to whether the Sixers should select Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram first overall. In an interview segment on ESPNU's College Basketball podcast, Kentucky head coach John Calipari said that Philadelphia should skip over the LSU and Duke products and select Wildcats guard Jamal Murray, declaring him as the "safe No.1".

"What does Philadelphia need more than anything else? Someone to make shots and guard play. I am biased. I want my guy. But he can play multiple positions, he can physically step in and play right away. He can play the point. He can score in bunches. You watch Golden State. Who really is their point guard? Whoever has it.'' [ESPN.com]

Murray, a third-team All-American this past year, averaged 20 points per game, 2.2 assists and 2.3 turnovers. He shot 40.8 percent from beyond the arc and 45.4 from the field in 35.2 minutes a game for the Wildcats.

"He can stretch the defense, play off the ball and the NBA is going position less,'' Calipari said on the podcast. "He can flat-out shoot the ball and is physically ready.''

"If you're going to take the No. 1 pick, you probably should do it from our program,'' Calipari said. [ESPN.com]

Calipari mentions that Murray is what the Sixers need, but at this point, it is still up in the air as to whether the team should draft for need or best player available. With a surplus of big men on the roster and none specifically to build around, it's tough to believe they'd take Murray, someone who would fit with the current team, over Simmons, who has the potential to become a generational talent to build around.

The 2016 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 23 in New York City.
