Jim Salisbury and Joel Sherman are reporting that John Mayberry Jr. has avoided arbitration and has signed a 1-year contract with the Phillies for $1.587 million.
Last season, Mayberry Jr. slashed an unimpressive line of, .227/.286/.391. He did have a few impressive games, such as June 5, 2013 where he hit two extra inning homeruns against the Marlins. The first homer being in the 10th to tie the game and a grand slam in the 11th inning off Steve Cishek to beat the Marlins 7-3.
Over his career he has .274/.321/.526 against southpaws and has hit a total of 46 homeruns in his five-year career with the Phillies.
His role with the Phillies this season is still unclear with emergence of Darin Ruf last two seasons. With spring training around the corner, the position battle between Ruf and Mayberry Jr. will be one to follow this spring.
