When a team is desparate for any form of points, you can almost sense the clock moving slower. There was far too much time left on the clock when the Vancouver Canucks managed the tying goal at 7:31 of the third period.
Just when it appeared that neither team would net the game-winner in regulation, the jaws of defeat not only snatched away a victory, it snatched away a point.
Ryan Kesler's second goal of the game with 2:25 to play proved to be the difference as the Canucks dropped the Flyers to 1-6-0 on the season, their worst start in franchise history, with a 3-2 win at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers would open the scoring midway through the first as Tye McGinn pounced on a rebound for his second goal of the season.
Just 10 seconds later, a fortunate bounce of the stanchion behind the Flyers net went right to the tape of Kesler to tie the game.
Again, it was McGinn who would help the Flyers strike in the second. He was on the doorstep for the go-ahead goal at 2:10 of the second period.
It would take until 7:31 of the third for Vancouver to tie the game, with Christopher Higgins getting the equalizer on a one-timer from the slot.
With time winding down, the Flyers started to collapse into their own zone. That allowed the Canucks to fire at will on Steve Mason, who made several incredible saves before allowing the eventual game-winning goal to Kesler on a rebound.
The Flyers never had an answer, firing only 13 shots in the final 40 minutes after taking nine in the first period. The Canucks tested Mason, taking 25 shots with Mason making 22 saves.
The 1-6-0 Flyers, off to their worst start in franchise history with just 10 goals in seven games this season, are back in action on Thursday when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
