The Sixers got demolished by the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night at Air Canada Centre by a score of 128-94 in a performance that left no silver linings for fans to cling on to.
The Sixers went blow for blow with the Raptors to open the game, with the foundation of a close contest being laid. Soon that foundation would crack as the Sixers put the Raptors at the free throw line repeatedly.
Toronto went to the charity stripe 16 times in the first quarter alone and Raptors' All-Star shooting guard Demar DeRozan took eight of those free throws in a quarter that saw DeRozan gash the Sixers for 15 points.
What was once a 17-16 Toronto lead ballooned to a 36-19 Toronto lead after a the Raptors went on a 21-4 run to close the first stanza. The Sixers fouled the Raptors 11 times in the first quarter alone.
In the second quarter Ben Simmons scored six unanswered points as the Sixers began to show some life. Simmons would go into the half with 11 points, with two of them coming on mid-range jumpers.
The Sixers also got an injection from Jahlil Okafor, who made his season debut on Saturday night. Okafor had five points and five rebounds in seven minutes off of the bench in the first half. His five rebounds led all players.
Toronto held a commanding lead throughout the half but the Sixers were extremely lucky that it was not worse. The Raptors got open looks behind the arc way too often but as a team the Raptors were 4-of-18 from three point range in the first half.
The Sixers did not help themselves much either, as they went 3-of-11 from 3.
After Dario Saric sent Demar DeRozan to the line at the buzzer the Raptors took a 62-49 lead into halftime.
The Sixers had 19 fouls at halftime. Dario Saric, Robert Covington, T.J. McConnell, and Jahlil Okafor each had three. Amir Johnson and Markelle Fultz both had two.
Jerryd Bayless led the team with 14 points, while Demar DeRozan led everybody with 23 and 12 free throw attempts.
Toronto continued to pour it on in the third quarter. The Sixers failed to pass with precision or defend with any vigor as the Raptors scored 40 points in the frame and broke the century mark after Philadelphia native and Villanova product Kyle Lowry hit a corner three with seconds left in the third.
The Sixers had 17 turnovers total in both of their first two contests, and had turned it over 17 times by the end of the third quarter tonight.
In the fourth quarter the Raptors phoned it in and put their starters on the bench in favor of getting some of their depth players minutes in a game that really ended before the first half was over.
Ben Simmons scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out eight assists. Despite the impressive stat line it still feels empty given the overall performance of the team in this game. Simmons led the Sixers in all three categories.
Jerryd Bayless (16), Justin Anderson (12), and Jahlil Okafor (10) joined Simmons as the only Sixers in double figures.
Demar DeRozan led all players with 30 points in 26 minutes, Serge Ibaka added 21 points in 24 minutes and Kyle Lowry scored 17 points in 28 minutes. The trio combined for 68 of of Toronto's 128 points.
The sixers set season highs in turnovers with 20 and committed 26 fouls in the 34-point defeat.
The Sixers are now 0-3 to the start the season.
