Late-inning heroics from Franco, Ruf power Phillies over Reds

Final: Phillies 5, Reds 4

WP: Jonathan Papelbon (1-0, 1.29 ERA) LP: Tony Cingrani (0-2, 3.05 ERA)

Philadelphia, PA – In what was a wet, 57-degree night at Citizens Bank Park, the Philadelphia Phillies (20-33) snapped their seven-game losing streak against right hander Johnny Cueto and the Cincinnati Reds (22-28) with a late-inning rally.

On seven hits, four of which were doubles, the Reds jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after four innings against right hander Sean O'Sullivan. First baseman Joey Votto hit a RBI double and single in the top of the first and third respectively. A double by shortstop Zack Cozart, and a sacrifice bunt RBI by center fielder Billy Hamilton, added two additional runs for Cincinnati in the top of the fourth.

That Reds failed to score again in the remaining five innings of the game, and they picked up just three additional hits: Jay Bruce single (5th), Cozart single (6th), and Bruce single (7th).

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies trailed 4-2. Their only runs at that point of the game came from an unearned run, RBI-ground out by center fielder Odubel Herrera in the second, and a solo home run by second baseman Chase Utley in the sixth.

A two-out double by first baseman Ryan Howard in the bottom of the eighth brought the tying run to the plate in third baseman Maikel Franco, who was appearing in his 33rd career game. On a 2-1 count against 31-year-old right hander Jumbo Diaz, Franco homered for the third time of his career to tie the game at four.

The Phillies didn't miss a beat in the bottom of the ninth. Herrera led off the inning with his 12th double of the season, and catcher Carlos Ruiz followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance him to third base with only one out. Pinch-hitting for Jonathan Papelbon, who threw a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning, Darin Ruf hit a RBI, walk-off single to score Herrera and secure the Phillies their first win since May 23rd.

Former Phillie Marlon Byrd exited tonight's game early with what is reportedly a fractured right wrist. He went 1-2 with a double, which nearly cleared the right field fence, and a run scored.
