Lehigh Valley Ironpigs to change their name to the Cheesesteaks for Salute to Philly Night

Last season, the Fresno Grizzlies, a minor league team in California, changed their name to the Fresno Tacos for one night, donning special jerseys and hats to pay tribute to their annually popular Taco Truck Throwdown event. This season, the Ironpigs are jumping on the name-changing train and will be known as the Lehigh Valley Cheesesteaks on their Salute to Philly Night on June 10th at Coca-Cola Park.

Fans can go to LVCheesesteaks.com to vote on which hat the team will wear on the night, having the opportunity to select a cheesesteak cap either 'wit' or 'witout' onions. The official Ironpigs press release includes a statement from their general manager along with a more in depth explanation of the jerseys the team plans to wear.

"Today, we've officially raised the Steaks," exclaimed IronPigs President and General Manager Kurt Landes. "As a Phillies affiliate, we can't wait to celebrate all things Philadelphia, including the iconic cheesesteak on 'Salute to Philadelphia Night.'"

The Cheesesteaks black jersey design features the word "Steaks" emblazoned across the front chest in "Cheese Wiz" yellow. The chest patch, complete with the appearance of dripping cheese, was specifically designed to emulate the characteristics of hot cheese on a steak sandwich. The jersey's sleeve patch incorporates the steak sandwich logo.

Cheesesteaks have been referred to as both a civic icon and a cultural obsession in Philadelphia. Debuting in the 1930's, the cheesesteak was invented in Philadelphia and today is served in hundreds of steakhouses around the city. [Ironpigsbaseball.com]

The June 10th matchup against the Durham Bulls will also include an appearance by the Phanatic and post-game fireworks. Check out the Ironpigs promotional video of them #RaisingtheSteaks below…
