Losing streak now up to seven games as Phillies fall to Brewers

Final: Milwaukee Brewers 4, Philadelphia Phillies 1  ❖  Attendance: 22,890.

Philadelphia, PA — Coming into tonight's game, it looked like the Philadelphia Phillies (26-28) had a chance to end their losing streak. They were facing Chase Anderson of the Milwaukee Brewers (25-29), who happens to be the only starting pitcher that the Phils have scored more than four runs against this season. However, the offense didn't jump on him the same way they did the first time around. Anderson only allowed three hits to Phillies hitters, including a solo homer to Maikel Franco. That home-run was the only real offense that the Phillies were able to muster.

Jerad Eickhoff had a solid outing, only allowing two runs over six and two-thirds innings. He left the game in the seventh inning after being hit in the ankle by a line drive. The bullpen wasn't the sharpest, with David Hernandez loading the bases in the eighth and closer Jeanmar Gomez allowing a two-run homer in the ninth. Ultimately, tonight's struggles of the bullpen didn't matter, as the lack of offense kept the Phillies from having a chance at winning.

WP: Chase Anderson (3-6, 4.68 ERA)  ❖  LP: Jerad Eickhoff (2-8, 3.93 ERA)  ❖  SV: Jeremy Jeffress (14)

In the top of the second, Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy singled to lead off the inning. One out later, Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled into the right field corner. Lucroy attempted to  score on the play, but a fantastic relay from the recently acquired outfielder Jimmy Paredes to second baseman Andres Blanco to catcher Cameron Rupp nailed him at the plate. Nieuwenhuis went to third on the throw, and scored on the next play: a double by Aaron Hill. Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff was able to get the last out and prevent any more damage from being done.

The bats were silent for both teams until the top of the fourth inning, when Chris Carter hit a solo home-run to left-center field to extend the Brewers' lead. However, in the Phillies' half of the inning, third baseman Maikel Franco blasted a ball into the left field seats to cut their opponent's lead in half.

In the bottom of the sixth, Odubel Herrera got things started by reaching on a throwing error by former Phillies prospect Jonathan Villar. He was moved up to second on a ground out by Blanco. During Paredes' at-bat, Herrera went to third on a passed ball. After a strike-out by Paredes, Franco came to the plate. Unfortunately, Franco was unable to score the runner, as he flied out to right field.

The Brewers had a big opportunity to add on to their lead in the top of the eighth inning against the Phillies bullpen. Scooter Gennett singled to right field and Ryan Braun followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Lucroy was intentionally walked to load the bases. It was at this point that set-up man Hector Neris was brought in to pitch for the Phils. He struck out the first batter he faced, got the next one to ground into a force out at home plate, and struck out the final one.  This seemed like it could be a game-changing moment, as it allowed the Phillies to stay within striking distance.

However, in the ninth, the Brewers made up for not capitalizing during the previous inning. Ramon Flores singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. Villar homered one out later, further extending the Brewers' lead and giving their closer some breathing room.
