When the Eagles used their first-round pick at this year's draft to select Nelson Agholor, it was clear they were drafting another piece of the team's future at wide receiver.
What most people probably didn't expect was that Agholor could factor into that future almost immediately. As in, be a top receiver.
That is what one NFL executive has said regarding the Eagles newest addition to the wide receiver position.
"He should be good, real good,'' the executive told NJ.com's Mark Eckel. "I'd bet on him. Agholor is a No. 1."
What this means is that the Eagles likely have drafted two impact receivers in the previous two drafts. It was clear they got a piece of the future as Jordan Matthews put up excellent numbers to open his NFL career – 67 receptions, 872 yards and eight touchdowns.
Playing alongside the first-round pick in Agholor should alleviate some of the pressure the second-rounder Matthews could face in his sophomore season.
"I look at Matthews as a good receiver, very solid in every aspect, but not a No. 1 guy," the executive said. "So now Matthews won't have that pressure on him. They'll be good together."
When you add in another second-year receiver in Josh Huff, who is certainly looking to improve on a shaky rookie season, as well as new addition Miles Austin and veteran Eagle Riley Cooper, the Eagles already have a good group at wide receiver on paper.
And you can't forget the other options that the quarterback group will have with tight ends Zach Ertz and Brent Celek and running backs Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathews, who could certainly factor into the passing game.
But the offense will likely center around the possible 1-2 punch at wide receiver, two players that two years ago, didn't have an NFL home. Now, Agholor and Matthews are teammates and could turn into one of the best tandems in the NFL.
