FLUSHING, N.Y. — On the heels of the tragic death of fellow National League East divisional opponent RHP Jose Fernandez, the Philadelphia Phillies (70-86) and New York Mets (83-73) met on Sunday for their final Citi Field matchup of the season featuring right-handed starters Jake Thompson and Robert Gsellman.

Behind Gsellman's seven shutout innings, the Mets ultimately came out on top to capture the win series victory of the four-game set in which they outscored the Phillies 44-23. The Phillies allowed 25 unanswered runs to conclude the series.

The Phillies mustered just three hits on offense off the bats of shortstop Freddy Galvis, left fielder Cody Asche and catcher Jorge Alfaro. Center fielder Odubel Herrera and third baseman Maikel Franco each walked in the contest. Thompson allowed three runs on five and three walks through four innings, suffering his sixth career losing decision.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence honoring the life and career of Fernandez, who was killed in  a boating accident off of Miami Beach early Sunday morning, was held. Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes also hung a Mets jersey with Fernandez' name on it in their dugout.

WP: Robert Gsellman (3-2, 2.56 ERA) ❖ LP: Jake Thompson (3-6, 5.70 ERA)

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second via a RBI ground out by first baseman James Loney. They did not look back there, adding two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, five in the seventh and six in the eighth.

Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and third baseman Jose Reyes were tied for the Mets lead in the RBI column with four. Each of Cabrera's RBIs came from a grand slam against RHP Frank Herrmann in the seventh. The Venezuela native hit previously hit a walk-off three-run home run against the Phillies in extras on Thursday.

Mets center fielder Curtis Granderson also homered in the victory, solidifying his first season of 30 or more home runs since 2012 with the New York Yankees (43).

Phillies pitchers combined to allow 17 runs on 14 hits and nine walks while striking out nine Mets batters. They threw 201 total pitches, 112 of which were strikes.

The Phillies will head to Atlanta for their final road series of the season, as well as their final games at Turner Field with the Braves slated to move to SunTrust Park at the start of the 2017 season. Right-handers Jerad Eickhoff and Julio Teheran will square off to open the three-game set on Tuesday.  (Time: 7:10 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: SportsRadio 94 WIP).
