Mets slug eight home runs, come back to beat Phillies in historic night at Citizens Bank Park

Final: Mets 16, Phillies 7

WP: Sean Gilmartin (3-1, 2.34 ERA) LP: Hector Neris (2-1, 3.42 ERA)

Philadelphia, PA – History was made Monday evening at Citizens Bank Park, as 11 combined home runs were hit in a National League game for the first time since May 17, 1979.

In a game which lasted three hours and 33 minutes before a crowd of 23,744, seven doubles, eight home runs and 16 scored runs by the New York Mets (68-56) delivered the Phillies their 75th loss of the season.

The Phillies allowed a club-record 15 extra-base hits, which concurrently set the Mets' franchise record in the category. New York's eight home runs also set a club record. Shortstop Ruben Tejada was the only Mets starter, excluding their starting pitcher, to not go yard this evening in South Philadelphia.

In his his first appearance since April 14, third baseman David Wright (hamstring, back) went 2-5 with three runs scored, one walk and a solo home run.

Following a 1-2-3, 11-pitch first inning from left-hander Adam Morgan, the Phillies capitalized against the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year award recipient, Jacob deGrom.

The inning began in a bizarre way, as second baseman Cesar Hernandez seemed to have walked on five balls instead of the convention four. Shortstop Freddy Galvis, followed with a single to center field. The third batter of the half-inning, center fielder Odubel Herrera, lined out.

With two runners on and one out, first baseman Ryan Howard hit an opposite-field, three-run home run. This was deGrom's sixth home run surrendered in the first inning this season over 24 starts, and Howard's first home run since August 7 in San Diego. Howard had not homered at home since July 19 against right hander Dan Haren and the Miami Marlins.

In his first at-bat since April 14, returning from hamstring and spinal injuries, Mets' third baseman David Wright went yard to the second deck in left field. This is his second home run of the season in nine games overall.

Catcher Cameron Rupp did not waste any time in getting that run back for the Phillies. Leading off the bottom of the second inning, the 26-year-old homered into the Mets' bullpen. Galvis and Herrera singled later on in the inning, but a baserunning mistake prematurely ended a further rally.

Mets' center fielder Juan Lagares went deep the next half-inning for the fourth combined home run of the night between the two clubs. This was the 2014 Gold Glove Award winner's fifth homer of the season, and his first since August 13 against the Rockies.

With runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the third, right fielder Domonic Brown jacked his fifth home run of the season, a three-run blast to right field to give the Phillies a 7-2 advantage.

deGrom's outing tonight ended after just 2 2/3 innings, the shortest of his career in 46 appearances. He gave up a career-high seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks. The right hander's earned run average rose from 1.98 to 2.29 upon exit.

The Mets retaliated in the top of the fourth to pull within two runs. After allowing four hits, two of which were home runs by second baseman Wilmer Flores and catcher Travis d'Arnaud, Morgan was pulled after tossing a career-low 3 2/3 innings.

An inning later, New York continued the common theme of the game of going yard, this time in opposition of reliever Hector Neris. Another pair of blasts were sky-rocketed out of the yard, a three-run home run by Flores for his second in two innings, and a solo-shot off the bat of right fielder Michael Cuddyer.

Two more runs were added by the Mets in the top of the sixth inning, again off of a home run. Facing right hander Justin De Fratus, first baseman Daniel Murphy hit a two-run blast to right center field.

Murphy set the Mets' single-game franchise record for home runs, seven, as well as the record for number of home runs hit in a game at Citizens Bank Park, 10.

The New York scoring threat did not end there. Following a Wright walk and a Flores double, d'Arnaud laced a two-run double down the right field line to put the Mets on top, 13-7.

In the top of the seventh against De Fratus, Lagares picked up his second run-batted-in of the night with a RBI-single. This was the Mets' 12th unanswered run scored, after trailing 7-2 entering the fourth inning.

A double off the bat of rookie pinch-hitter Michael Conforto in the seventh tied the Mets' franchise record for extra-base hits in a game, 13.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Murphy hit his second double of the game to break the record for New York. Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes added onto that mark, however, through hitting a two-run blast off of the left field, second-deck facade. Cespedes' blast also set a Mets franchise record for single-game home runs, 8.

The Phillies' offense was ultimately held silent after Brown's three-run, third inning blast. They were 2-12 with runners in scoring position this evening, and left nine men on base.
